This is the DIY sugar scrub that I love to make. Sugar scrubs are so simple, by making them yourself you know what is in them and then know that there are no toxins! I only use olive and coconut oil and then only essential oils (not fragrances) for scent. I do not like the inch of oil on the top where you have to stir the scrub before you use it. So this one you stir when you make it, and then you do not have to ever stir again!
I use an organic sugar, but you can use brown sugar or regular white sugar. I use sugar scrub for my lips and body. It is great all over exfoliator and the coconut oil is amazing for your skin. Find yourself a cute jar and keep refilling it, and save yourself some money.
Easy DIY Sugar Scrub Recipe
- 1 cup of the Sugar of your choice
- 1/4 cup Organic Coconut Oil (not fractionated. Use the one that is hard at room temperature)
- 1 tsp Organic Olive Oil
- 20 drops of Essential Oil of your choice
How to Make Your DIY Sugar Scrub
First you need to have your jar ready, and put your 1 cup of sugar in a bowl so you have room to stir freely. In a separate glass bowl melt your coconut oil over a pot of warm water. Then stir in the olive oil and essential oils. Pour the oil over the sugar and give it a good stir. You can then transfer the mixture to your jar and label. The sugar mixture should have this type of consistency:

Adding the tiny bit of olive oil will help keep the coconut oil from hardening when it gets cold. This is an easy project and a cheap gift to make and give away. The oils I like to use are: Tangerine and Lavender, Grapefruit and Douglas fir, Eucalyptus and Spearmint, or Myrrh and Frankincense. Do whatever oil you love the most and do not be scared to mix and match!
How to Use Your DIY Sugar Scrub
In the shower or bath, scoop out a small amount and gently rub it onto wet skin in small circles. Focus on rough spots like elbows, knees and feet. Rinse with warm water and pat dry. The oils stay behind and leave your skin so soft that you can usually skip lotion. Be careful, because the oils can make the shower floor slippery!
For your lips, use a tiny bit on dry lips, rub gently for a few seconds and wipe off. For lips and face, I make a small separate jar with no essential oils, or just a drop of lavender, since mint and citrus oils can sting sensitive skin.
Tips for the Best Sugar Scrub
- Use it 1 to 3 times a week. Exfoliating every day can irritate your skin.
- Do not use it on skin that is sunburned, broken or freshly shaved.
- Citrus oils like tangerine and grapefruit can make skin more sensitive to the sun, so use those blends at night or on skin that will be covered.
- Keep water out of the jar and use a clean spoon so it stays fresh. It keeps for a few months.
- Brown sugar is softer and gentler, and white or organic cane sugar gives a stronger scrub. Try both and see which one your skin loves most.
- Tie a ribbon around the jar and add a handmade label for a sweet, simple gift.
