Music has always been a big part of my life, and the more I learn, the more I am amazed by it. There is so much research now on the benefits of music for our minds, bodies and spirits. LifeHack put together a great article on 15 science-backed benefits of listening to music, and I wanted to share them here in my own words, along with why I think music is one of the easiest ways to raise your vibration.
15 Benefits of Music for Your Body and Mind
1. Music Makes You Happier
When you listen to music you love, your brain releases dopamine, the “feel good” chemical. Researchers at McGill University saw this happen on brain scans. Fifteen minutes of your favorite songs is a natural mood lift.
2. Music Helps You Run Better
Runners who listened to upbeat, motivating music ran faster at the start of their runs than those who ran with calm music or no music at all.
3. Music Lowers Stress
Listening to music you enjoy lowers cortisol, the stress hormone. And when people actually make music, by singing or playing drums, it may give the immune system an extra boost. So sing along!
4. Music Helps You Sleep
Students who listened to relaxing classical music for 45 minutes before bed slept better than those who listened to an audiobook or nothing at all. For more ideas, see my post on natural sleep aids.
5. Music Can Lift Depression
In that same sleep study, symptoms of depression went down in the group that listened to classical music. Other research found calming and classical music lifted people’s moods, while very harsh, heavy music had the opposite effect. Music is a wonderful support, but if you are struggling, please reach out to a professional too.
6. Music Can Help You Eat Less
Soft lighting and soft music during meals helped people eat less and enjoy their food more. Try it at your next family dinner.
7. Music Lifts Your Mood While Driving
A study in the Netherlands found that music can put you in a better mood behind the wheel, which may even lead to safer driving.
8. Music Helps You Learn and Remember
Music can help you learn and recall information, though the best kind of music depends on whether you are a musician and how much you like what you are listening to.
9. Music Calms Patients Before and After Surgery
Relaxing music before surgery lowered anxiety, and soothing music after heart surgery helped patients relax. Ask your care team if you can bring your own music.
10. Music Can Ease Pain
Studies have found that music helped reduce pain in cancer patients, intensive care patients and older adults, especially calming music or songs the patient chose.
11. Music Helps People With Alzheimer’s Remember
The nonprofit Music & Memory uses favorite songs to help people with dementia reconnect with who they are. Music reaches so many parts of the brain that it can wake up memories nothing else can.
12. Music Helps Stroke Recovery
Stroke patients in Finland who listened to music they chose for a couple of hours a day had better recovery of memory and focus than those who did not.
13. Music Builds Verbal Skills
Young children who took music lessons for just one month showed big jumps in verbal intelligence in a study at York University.
14. Music Lessons Support Learning in Kids
Six-year-olds who took singing or keyboard lessons had larger gains in IQ and school test scores than kids who took drama or no lessons. The singing group did the best!
15. Music Keeps Your Brain Sharp as You Age
Older adults with years of musical training scored higher on thinking tests than those without. It is never too late to pick up an instrument.
The Benefits of Music and Your Frequency
Here is the part I get so excited about. Now imagine if all of these benefits of music were amplified because the music itself was tuned to a healing frequency. Frequencies like 432Hz and the 528Hz love frequency carry their own set of benefits, and when you add those to everything music already does for us… wow. Now we are getting somewhere.
So turn on your favorite songs, sing out loud, dance in your kitchen, and let music raise your vibration every single day.
