A seed grows with no sound, but a tree falls with huge noise. Destruction has noise, but creation is quiet. Therein lies the power of silence. Enjoying the silence does not mean this is peace. Peace is a state of mind and body.
The Power of Silence Feels So Good
Taking space from others gives you a chance to set boundaries, work on yourself, then to invite them back into your life with more clarity. Learning to set self-love boundaries. Break the patterns of over-giving, people pleasing and holding people accountable to their creations. This might be a season of loneliness that I talked about in another post. Taking the time to do this, to reset and evaluate the people we have in our life can be healing for our souls and bring us that peace.
Humanity needs to spend more time listening. Listening to people more than talking and saying your own thoughts. I have been trying to listen and feel more around me. If we were all to just listen more, it would combat the selfishness of the world. Listen more to people instead of talking, listen to the thoughts, emotions and sounds of the world. I need more quiet and stillness in life. This world is very loud with all of its opinions. Take time out for yourself each day. Make sure you are running your day and what you need, and do not let the day run you.
Staying quiet doesn’t mean I have nothing to say, it means I do not think you are ready to hear my thoughts.
Why Silence Is So Healing
We are surrounded by noise all day long. Phones, TV, traffic, notifications, other people’s opinions. Our minds rarely get a break. When we finally sit in the quiet, it can feel uncomfortable at first, because all of the things we have been drowning out start to come up. But that is where the healing happens. Silence gives us room to hear our own thoughts, to feel what we have been avoiding, and to hear that still, small voice of our intuition and spirit.
Science agrees that quiet is good for us too. Constant noise has been linked to higher stress and even heart strain, and time in the quiet can help our minds rest and reset. You can read more about the effects of noise on our health from Harvard Health.
The Power of Silence in Our Relationships
Silence is not only about being alone. It is also about how we show up for each other. When we stop rushing to give our opinion, fix the problem or have the last word, people feel truly heard. Sometimes the most loving thing we can do is sit with someone and just listen. And sometimes, choosing not to respond to drama or gossip is the strongest answer we can give. You do not have to defend yourself to everyone. Your peace is worth more than proving a point. When you practice the power of silence in your relationships, you will notice conversations get deeper, arguments calm down faster, and the people around you open up more.
Simple Ways to Bring More Silence Into Your Day
- Start your morning with five quiet minutes before you pick up your phone.
- Drive with the radio off once in a while and just be with your thoughts.
- Take a walk in nature without headphones.
- Try a few minutes of meditation before bed.
- In conversations, practice listening fully before you think about what you will say next.
Like a seed growing in the soil, so much of our growth happens quietly. Give yourself the gift of silence, and watch what grows.
