Ingredients
  • 1/2 teaspoon Arrowroot Powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon organic Cocoa Powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon Beet Root Powder
  • An air-tight container for storage
What to Do

As with any homemade make-up recipe, the amounts vary by person. You’ll have to experiment with quantities of each ingredient to find the shade that works for you. I always start with a base of about 1/2 tsp of arrowroot and darken as needed, testing on my inner arm as I go.

When you get your desired shade, store in a small jar or old makeup shaker and use as needed.

Why Make Your Own Natural Blush?

Many conventional blushes contain synthetic dyes, talc, fillers and preservatives. This natural blush uses just three simple ingredients from your kitchen or health food store. It costs pennies to make, and you know exactly what is going on your face.

What Each Ingredient Does

  • Arrowroot powder is the light, silky base. It softens the color and helps it blend.
  • Beet root powder gives a beautiful natural pink to rosy red.
  • Cocoa powder deepens the shade and warms it up for medium and darker skin tones.

Finding Your Perfect Shade

  • Fair skin: Start with mostly arrowroot and just a pinch of beet root powder for a soft pink.
  • Medium skin: Use equal parts arrowroot and beet root with a tiny bit of cocoa.
  • Deeper skin: Add more beet root and cocoa for a rich berry or bronze glow.

Add a little at a time and test on your inner arm as you go. It is so much easier to darken than to lighten!

How to Apply Natural Blush

Smile, then use a fluffy blush brush to sweep a small amount onto the apples of your cheeks, blending up toward your temples. Tap off the extra before you apply, since a little goes a long way. Build up slowly for more color.

Make It a Cream Blush

If you prefer a dewy, cream blush, it is easy to turn this powder into a cream. Melt 1 teaspoon of shea butter or coconut oil with a tiny piece of beeswax, then stir in your finished powder until it is smooth. Pour it into a small tin and let it set. Dab it on your cheeks with your fingertips and blend. Cream blush is wonderful for dry skin and gives a fresh, natural glow, especially in the winter months.

Why I Love Beet Root Powder

Beet root powder is one of my favorite natural colorants. It gives a gorgeous flush of color that looks like you just came in from a walk in the cold, and it is made from nothing but dried beets. You can also use it to tint homemade lip balm or add color to bath bombs. A little jar goes a long way, so one purchase will last you a long time. Look for organic beet root powder with no added fillers.

How to Store Your Natural Blush

An old makeup shaker, a small glass jar or a clean compact all work well. Keep it in a cool, dry place out of the bathroom steam, and use a clean brush each time to keep it fresh.

Tips and Safety

  • Patch test first. Try a little on your jaw or inner arm and wait a day to make sure your skin is happy.
  • Keep it dry. Store in an airtight container away from moisture so it does not clump or grow mold.
  • Make small batches and make fresh every few months.
