First I want to say- There is no judgment here, no matter how you are feeding your babies. I am simply here to provide information on Infant Formula and Weaning. I for one had the hardest time nursing as it took so much energy to keep my milk supply up. It is a very mental thing, and we all do what we need to do in these seasons. This is just some cool things I have found and some ideas you might not have thought of.

Breast Milk vs. Formula

Compare these two photographs, one of breast milk under a microscope and one of infant formula:

The images show breast milk cells and formula on a cellular level. You can see how the formula has some nutrients (the rainbow bubbles) but the breast milk is totally made up of nutrients and has none of the grey filler matter. (Formula is usually made up of a base-form cow’s milk or soy milk. Explain why this matters) Breast milk is obviously the best, being the most alkaline, [define this word–does this mean better on your stomach? Less acidic?] as well as containing everything baby needs for their developing bodies. So if you are unable to breastfeed and want another option, check out this recipe I’ve included for an infant formula that will give your child the nutrients they need without the fillers.

DIY Baby Formula

For babies, if you are not nursing, here is a DIY baby formula that a lot of mothers have used, and it chunks those babes right up! Goat’s milk is the closest they have found to mother’s milk, because the goats’ digestive systems are similar to a human’s, rather than a cow’s, which have seven stomachs. The added sugar and oils in the recipe, along with the celery juice and the good fats, are good for a baby’s developing brain. The raw goat’s milk provides the needed enzymes to leave babies pancreas intact so they don’t develop a lactose intolerant system.

  • 1 quart fresh, organic, raw goat’s milk
  • 1/4 cup fresh juiced celery
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons organic olive oil
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons unrefined coconut oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon molasses
  • 1 tablespoon turbinado sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ionic silver

Just warm the coconut oil and molasses with the sugar till it dissolves, mix everything together, and keep in glass jar in the fridge

Weaning

If you are nursing and want to wean your baby, PLEASE do not do the cow’s milk for any bottles. You will hinder your baby’s health right from the beginning of their life, especially if lactose intolerance runs in the family. If you, as the parent, have issues with lactose intolerance, your children will develop it even earlier than you did, and their children even earlier. If you want more information on this, see the Cow’s Milk post.

Best start them off with what is good for them and not get them used to cow’s milk. Just give them almond or coconut milk and you will be setting them up for a healthier life. Either of the milks have just as much calcium as cow’s milk, but as a bonus babies get the “good fats” from both of these milks. This is not formula—this is just an option after your child is at least a year old and you are done nursing. If you or your child starts to develop skin issues like eczema, rashes, etc look into getting them off cow’s milk. Allergies are also linked to consumption of cow’s milk, look into NAET treatments to clear these allergies.
